Samsung Developing 11K super-resoultion Displays With 2250 ppi for smartphones

Samsung hoping to bring 3D effects to smartphones with 11K displays

Samsung, notable competitor and alleged plagiarist, has done more than enough to win the pixels war. Thanks to Apple’s marketing plan of Retina Display, this South Korean company is developing what is called as a ‘super-resolution’ display that will come with a mind-boggling 11K resolution.

Galaxy S6, which is the recent flagship from Samsung had a 1440 x 2560 pixels Quad HD display, which means it gave 577 pixels per square inch. The company wants to do something mind boggling with its display. A smartphone display with an 11K resolution that converts into a 2250 pixels density per inch within the limitations of a 5.75 inch screen, which means the detailing and colors on the screen would be so intense that it will be able to reproduce a 3D-effect that would not even require you to wear special glasses.

This super resolution display would be 11,264 X 6,336; the full HD offers a 1080p resolution while a quad HD offers a 1440p resolution. Even though 4K displays that offers 806ppi density are likely to be uncovered by 2016, whether they would be included in smartphones still remains unanswered.

Samsung has set the year 2018 as the deadline to build an 11K display (11,264 ? 6336 pixels). To make this possible, Samsung is collaborating with as many as 13 domestic and foreign companies for the same. Also, the South Korean government is planning to invest 26.5 million US dollars on this project that has been titled EnDK. The government hopes that the company will be able to build the preliminary model just in time for a public display by the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

Though it may look like an exaggerated feature to offer consumers with such a high resolution display in smartphones, the company executive has a different view on this. Chu Hye Yong, Samsung Display Base Technology Department Executive Director says “Although some might think that 11K as ‘over specification’ that consumers do not need, this can work as a basis for Korean display industry [to] take another leap if related materials and parts improve through this,” as reported to Mashable.

Looks like 11k may indeed be the stuff of the future. However, we hope that the super resolution 11K display in future Samsung smartphones are supported by equally robust batteries or are more energy-efficient.
