Most porn websites being banned in India after Department of Telecommunications (DoT) order

According to the sources, the porn ban order has been issued by the telecom regulatory body in India, DoT however, in absence any written communications, it is not clear why the websites have been blocked.

Most of the Indian web users are reporting that when they try to visit adult website, the browser returns a blank page though some users have reported seeing a message, telling them that websites have been blocked after a Department of Telecom order.

As said above, so far Department of Telecom, which is handled by Telecom Minister Ravishankar Prasad, has not publicly communicated whether India has formally started blocking porn sites for the Indian web users and the reasons for it.

Another report suggests that the porn ban order seems to have been implemented sneakily at the behest of a secret directive from the government.

The pornban has however caught the fancy of redditors and twitterati alike. Some mocked Government of India’s decision to ban porn while others supported it.

A redditor, Nirgun‘s thread is the top thread on India section of Reddit while the tweets are just as sarcastic.

“I like how this order has been secretly passed and even a legal website has no idea if (and) when this order was passed. Nowhere in the civilized world would the government pass this kind of block without any discussion (and) debate in the public sphere”

Sample some of the tweets below :

The government directive to block such adult site does not have legal sanction. Recently, the Supreme Court had refused to pass an interim order to block porn sites in India. “Such interim orders cannot be passed by this court. Somebody may come to the court and say look I am above 18 and how can you stop me from watching it within the four walls of my room. It is a violation of Article 21,” Chief Justice H L Dattu had reportedly said.

Its sad that the land which believes in its liberal values and gave the world the magnificent treatise on love and sex, Kamasutra should retort to such bans. In long run, such bans hardly work because nothing is hidden on the Internet and everything is accessible if you have the right tools.
