C++ or Java: What should you learn to get a job at Microsoft/Google?

Do I Need To Learn C++ Or Java To Get Coding Jobs At Companies Like Google And Microsoft?

Most of those who pass out of an engineering college or complete a software certification course naturally think about landing a job in the top heavy-weight companies like Microsoft, Google, Facebook or Amazon.

But what does it take to get into giant software companies like Microsoft or Google. Questions often asked are, should I learn programming languages like C++ or Java, or rather ‘C’ which is the mother of all programming languages. While one may think that the companies look at candidate’s expertise in programming language while hiring, but there are few chances that they may be hardly interested in hiring someone who is an expert in a single programming language.

This holds true when a software company like Microsoft or Google makes an explicit decision to hire a new graduate in the hope that the investment in the new hire will be fruitful to the company over a period of time.

Similar views have been also expressed by John L. Miller, a Software Engineer/Architect and a Ph.D. in computer science and currently working in Azure Compute allocator at Microsoft. While answering a user’s query on Quora, he said:

If you want to work at a multinational software company, the exact programming language you know doesn’t usually matter. My team recently hired several people who don’t know C#, yet all of our work is in C#. They range from fresh graduates to fifteen year plus veterans. How did we mitigate risk? We made sure they’re good programmers in the language they already know, they’re solid software engineers, and they evaluated well in interviews.

It’s taking some time for them to adapt their knowledge of C++, C, or Java to C#. They are productive within a month or two, and fully adjusted in less than a year. That’s a pretty good return on investment.

Don’t worry about choosing between C++ or Java to get a job at the Googles, Microsofts, and Facebooks of the world. Instead, worry about being a great software engineer in the language you most frequently use. That will pay you the greatest dividends.
