Facebook, Google Fail To Make It To “10 Best Places To Work” In 2020

Glassdoor, the renowned career job site, on Wednesday, said that Facebook and Google have dropped out from the top 10 “best places to work” in the U.S. in 2020, according to their annual list rankings.

Google and Facebook are two of the most sought after companies to work in primarily due to employee pay and benefits, office perks, compensations, and a desirable work environment.

Of both the tech-giant companies, Facebook has been rated as the ‘best place to work’ three times in the past 10 years. However, this time the social media giant was ranked 23rd in Glassdoor’s best-places-to-work survey for 2020.

This is the company’s lowest position since it was ranked number one in 2011 as the top-rated workplace.

For the last couple of years, Facebook has been involved in a string of data privacy scandals that has brought negative attention to the company.

“There’s a lot of negative feedback on Facebook, and sometimes that can be tough on employees,” said Sarah Stoddard of Glassdoor.

“It’s easy to either feel discouraged or develop a bit of an ‘us versus them’ mentality when the media/public seem both technically ill-informed and antagonistic towards your company,” posted one full-time employee citing the negative attention on Facebook following the privacy scandals.

One recent Facebook hire cited the “constant negative press associated with the company,” while another worker said, “it seems like the company doesn’t have a great reputation.”

Similarly, Google, which was voted “best place to work” in 2015 and a consistent Top-25 finisher, slipped to 11th place from being ranked No. 8 last year.

While Facebook and Google are still favored by employees, external factors and the nature of their work are affecting how employees look at their companies.

“The decline in the technology industry could be attributed in part to the high-pressure working environment and poor work-life balance resulting from the increased public scrutiny in recent years,” Amanda Stansell, a senior research analyst at Glassdoor said.

Also, the Cupertino giant Apple, which was ranked 25th last year, is now at 84th spot. Further, Amazon Inc. known for not having a positive internal culture at work failed to make the list for the 12th straight year.

However, Microsoft Corp., the Redmond based software company, jumped from 34th position last year to 21st place this year.

Meanwhile, HubSpot Inc, a cloud-computing software company, clinched the No. 1 ranking, which was at 16th position last year. Also, tech firms like DocuSign Inc and Ultimate Software grabbed the third and eighth positions respectively.

Here is the complete list of the top 100 best companies to work for in 2020 in the U.S., according to Glassdoor.
