Linux Distro for students, Birds Linux 8.0 officially launched with Kernel 4.5 and Tor browser

Birds Linux 8.0 might have been in development for the past 3 months, but during this period, the developer has managed to update most of the core components to their latest versions. One of the things that you will notice after is that the distribution is now powered by a kernel from the Linux 4.5 series and includes the LibreOffice 5.1.2 office suite.

The Birds Linux 8.0 release switches from the Xfce 4.12 desktop environment, which was used in the previous version of the OS, to the GNOME 3 desktop. As a result, it has provided users with the GNOME 3.18.4 packages, along with the latest applications targeted for students, which include Budgie Calc, Budgie Zero, Wren Matrix, and Hoopoe.

As mentioned before, there are various updated components included in Birds Linux 8.0, and the most notable ones have been listed below:

  • VLC Media Player 2.2.2
  • GIMP 2.8.14-r1
  • Empathy 3.12.11
  • Google Chrome 50.0.2661.94

For those who are interested in downloading Birds Linux 8.0, there is a Live ISO image provided, courtesy of Softpedia. Unfortunately, if you are running a 32-bit operating system, then the program is not going to be compatible with your system. A 64-bit operating system is the bare minimum because it also provides you the opportunity to add more RAM in your system, thus improving the amount of freedom you get to run more programs.
