Facebook Bans A Woman Named Isis Again, Asks To Prove Her Identity
Every time there is a ISIS terror attack somewhere in the world, people named ISIS face the wrath of Facebook. Earlier, Facebook had banned a woman named ISIS after the Brussels terror attack and now after Bangladesh terror attacks, Facebook has again banned a woman named Isis. A 27-year-old UK woman named Isis has been banned from her Facebook account after the company launched a crackdown on jihadis using the social networking site. Isis Thomas, a resident of Bristol in Britain, was asked to send an identity proof by the social networking site to access her Facebook account. The Bristolian, unfortunately, shares her name with terror group ISIS.
On June 27, when Isis tried to log into her profile, Facebook asked her to change her name.
โI just tried to log in and when I did, the password went through and this box came up asking me something about changing my name. I was on Facebook as Isis Worcester, because when I first signed up years ago I didnโt use my real name, which is Isis Thomas, because of where I worked at the time,โ she said.
โI thought it was about the surname, so I just changed it to Isis Thomas. But that didnโt work and I realised they had a problem with me being called Isis,โ Isis said.
โThey sent a message saying Isis wasnโt allowed, it didnโt comply with the policy. They asked me to send in proof of identity, which I did.
โThat was on Monday and I havenโt been let on the site since,โ Isis was quoted as saying by โThe Sun.โ
โI checked out other times this has happened, and found a woman called Isis who had to start a Twitter campaign because Facebook made her send in ID three times before they finally let her back on,โ she added.
Isisโs mother Sian had named her after the ancient Egyptian goddess worshipped as the ideal mother, wife and the patron of nature and magic.
For most of her life, people commented on Isisโs pretty and unusual name, but things changed upon the rise of the terrorists declaring themselves the Islamic State โ commonly abbreviated as ISIS.
Recently, Facebook has launched a clampdown on ISIS extremists in its bid to erase all traces of the terror group.
โThings have definitely changed for me and my name.
โI used to work in a doctorsโ surgery and had my name on a badge. People would comment on it a lot, try to make jokes or tell me it was unfortunate. Some would think it was some kind of company name.
โIt frustrates me that people still use โIsisโ, especially when I see newspaper reports and theyโve written it โIsisโ instead of at least using capitals, like ISIS, because itโs an acronym,โ the Bristol University worker said.
โI have no plans to change my name, though, I love it. I just want Facebook to realise itโs my real name,โ she said.
โItโs as though she has never existed. I have found Facebook impossible to contact and Iโm furious,โ said Sian.
