Bungie, the developer behind Destinyย andย Halo, and NetEase, a China-based internet technology giant, are reportedly working on an unannounced first-person shooter (FPS) Destiny mobile game.
The report comes fromย The Game Post, which searches job listings and LinkedIn pages weekly for new clues. The news in question was found when an employee of NetEase who had posted on LinkedIn spilled the beans claiming to have worked on โan unannounced FPS mobile gameโ with Bungie.
While the LinkedIn post doesnโt directly indicate that it is a Destiny game, an anonymous source familiar with NetEase’s development plans confirmed to The Game Post that it was indeed a game set in the Destiny universe, which has been in development for over two years.
The source also confirmed that the new FPS mobile game will be a stand-alone title rather than an extension of the mobile version of Destiny 2 or its predecessor.
According to The Game Post report:
Last year, TGP reported that Bungie might be working on aย Destiny mobile game with NetEase Games, as the studio put out several job listings for a large mobile title in the Destiny franchise.
In addition to that, it looks like Bungie is nowย interested in building its own internal mobile game engineย to โreach players on iOS and Android mobile platformsโ.
NetEase Games is an expert when it comes to mobile games, with several huge mobile games under its belt. So, itโs safe to assume that sooner or later, Bungie will branch out the Destiny franchise to mobile devices.
For the unversed, NetEase had invested $100 million in Bungie back in 2018 to become a minority shareholder in the company. Back then, Bungie had said that the deal would help it โexplore new directionsโ and โbuild new worldsโ.
It also said, โ[NetEase has] a significant amount of experience in mobile we [Bungie] donโt haveโ and that the partnership will allow them to โincubate new ideas.” Earlier this year, NetEase collaborated with Blizzard Entertainment to create Diablo Immortal for mobile and PC.
Currently, there is no official confirmation from Bungie yet about the reported Destiny mobile game. Also, if the game is already in development for more than two years now, we can expect an announcement soon from the company. Besides the unannounced FPS game, Bungie is also working on a new IP described as โa character-focused multiplayer gameย withย humor and RPG elementsโ.
