Meta on Sunday announced its own video editing app called “Edits” for Instagram. The announcement comes amidst the TikTok ban in the U.S. and the removal of ByteDance’s popular editing solution CapCut from the App Store and the Google Play Store last week.
“Today we’re announcing a new app called “Edits,” for those of you who are passionate about making videos on your phone. There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators,” Instagram head Adam Mosseri said in a video posted on Threads on Sunday, adding that the app is targeted more at creators rather than casual video users.
“With Edits, we’re making it easier than ever for creators to bring their vision to life. Whether you’re editing a short Reel or crafting a longer video, this app provides the tools to make your content stand out.”
Launched as an alternative to rival CapCut, the app includes a full suite of creative tools, a dedicated inspiration tab, another tab for tracking ideas, and a high-quality camera for recording videos.
It also allows users to share drafts with friends and other creators and track video performance insights after sharing on Instagram.
One of the highlights of the Edits app is the “live insights dashboard,” which provides detailed engagement metrics from followers and non-followers and video performance analytics on how often specific parts of a video are skipped.
In a post on Threads, Mosseri said that Meta has been working on Edits “for months” and added that the app differs from CapCut.
“Edits will have a much broader range of creative tools and probably a smaller addressable audience. Think a place to track all your ideas instead of templates. Think AI video editing tools on a per clip or per video basis,” he wrote.
Edits is now available for pre-order on the iOS App Store and is expected to be introduced on the Android platform soon.
Although the Edits page in the iOS App Store states that it will be released for free on March 13, 2025, according to Mosseri, we can expect the app to be available for download in February.
Meanwhile, the app will undergo revisions and enhancements based on feedback from a select group of video creators to improve its overall user experience.
