ChatGPT’s Deep Research Adds “Download as PDF” Option

OpenAI is testing a long-anticipated feature for its ChatGPT Deep Research tool: the ability to download reports as PDFs.

While it may seem like a small update, it could be a game-changer for users who depend on ChatGPT to handle complex, multi-step research tasks.

What is Deep Research?

For those unaware, Deep Research is a premium feature in ChatGPT that allows an AI (artificial intelligence) agent to autonomously browse the Internet, analyse hundreds of sources, and compile detailed, well-cited reports from hundreds of online sources on topics ranging from science to policy to finance.

Up until now, saving a Deep Research report meant depending on the “copy” button—but that came with one big downside. When pasted into Word or other similar editors, the formatting often fell apart.

In fact, tests confirmed that these formatting issues were not only common and frustrating but also troublesome for users trying to preserve the report’s structure.

But that may soon change. As spotted by tech enthusiast Tibor on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI has finally started testing a new “Download as PDF” button in the ChatGPT web app.

While there’s no word yet on when this feature will roll out widely—or if it will be exclusive to Deep Research reports—but it’s likely to show alongside the existing copy button once it is live.

The introduction of the “Download as PDF” option would be a big win for users who wish to preserve the original layout and want a clean, professional-looking document straight from ChatGPT. It is also the kind of feature that makes Deep Research more practical for everyday work and sharing.

Besides the PDF feature, OpenAI is also rolling out a new GitHub connector for ChatGPT Deep Research, aimed at Teams subscribers who want to pull insights from repositories during the research process.

While we will have to wait for official confirmation on when these features will become widely available, it is clear that OpenAI is paying attention to user feedback and continuously working to enhance the Deep Research experience.
