President Trump Set To Extend TikTok Deadline For Third Time

TikTokโ€™s fate in the U.S. is once again hanging in the balance, as President Donald Trump hints at granting another deadline extension to ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, according to a new report from Reuters.

On June 17, 2025, Trump told reporters he would โ€œprobablyโ€ push back the deadlineโ€”againโ€”for ByteDance, giving it more time to sell the appโ€™s U.S. operations in compliance with national security laws.

What’s the current TikTok deadline for the US?

The current deadline is June 19, 2025, but Trump suggested he is ready to extend it by another 90 days, likely giving the company until September to finalize a deal. However, he stressed that Chinaโ€™s approval, particularly from President Xi Jinping, would be vital to any deal going forward.

โ€œProbably, yeah. Probably have to get China’s approval, but I think we’ll get it. I think President Xi will ultimately approve it,โ€ Trump said while answering reporters on Air Force One on Tuesday.

This would mark the third delay since the original U.S. ban date of January 19, 2025, mandated under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA) where ByteDance was required to sell TikTok’s U.S. business or face a nationwide ban.

However, Trump, who assumed office as the 47th President of the U.S. on January 20, 2025, chose not to enforce the TikTok divestment order. He instead signed an executive order and gave a reprieve of 75 days to TikTok, setting a new deadline of April 5.

Further, on April 4, 2025, the deadline was extended again for the second time, pushing it to June 19, 2025, by a further executive order. Back then, the officials said the extension would give more time for a deal to satisfy both U.S. security requirements and Chinese regulatory concerns.

Now, a third extension is in the works โ€” despite criticism from legal experts and congressional Republicans, who have questioned Trumpโ€™s legal authority to grant repeated extensions, as PAFACA only authorizes a one-time 90-day grace period. They are calling for stricter enforcement of the original law.

Legal analysts warn that repeated delays could trigger lawsuits over potential executive overreach and violations of statutory limits. Some say the ongoing delays are eroding trust in the process and weakening national security efforts, while others are arguing that the app should just be banned if a deal isnโ€™t reached soon.

For now, TikTok remains available to its more than 170 million U.S. users. However, behind the scenes, pressure is mounting on the White House, as it is racing to seal a deal that tackles both data-security worries and international trade hurdles. This third deadline extension could be ByteDanceโ€™s last shot โ€” and what happens in the coming weeks could determine whether TikTokโ€™s U.S. future ends with a sale โ€” or a shutdown.
