Spotify is giving music lovers more control over their playlists by expanding its tools with a new feature that allows Premium subscribers to add and customize transitions between tracks.
The feature, currently in beta for Premium subscribers, allows music enthusiasts and playlist experts alike to add seamless transitions between tracks and improve their playlists with features like volume, EQ, and effect curves, making it sound more like a DJ set than a simple queue of songs.
“Spotify Premium is the ultimate destination for fans to enjoy the music they love, and we’re always evolving to make it even better. With custom transitions in playlists, we hope to empower users to shape their listening experience and express themselves through the music they love,” Spotify said in its press release on Tuesday.
The new “Mix” button, now available in the playlist toolbar, offers both automatic and manual modes. Listeners can instantly blend songs using the “Auto” option or choose from preset transition styles such as Fade and Rise. For more advanced control, the feature includes detailed controls for volume, equalizer, and audio effects. Users can even view waveform and beat data to pinpoint precise transition spots for a seamless transition.
To assist with smoother mixing, Spotify will now display each track’s Camelot key and beats per minute (BPM), making it easier for Premium users to build playlists by tempo and tonality for smoother, tempo-matched transitions. This helps create playlists that flow naturally—whether for workouts, road trips, or parties—without awkward pauses or abrupt changes. Mixed playlists can be saved, shared, or even co-edited with friends, and listeners can toggle transitions on or off at any time.
The new Mix feature goes beyond technical tweaks, allowing Premium users to personalize their mixed playlists with custom cover art, stickers, and labels, and even invite friends to collaborate. At any time, listeners can go back to the old-school playlist experience by toggling the feature on or off by pressing the Mix button with a single tap.
Spotify says the feature is aimed at both casual listeners and playlist “experts,” noting that nearly 9 billion playlists have already been created on the platform. The music streaming giant believes that giving listeners more control over transitions will only boost engagement. The company suggests the tool works best with genres such as house and techno, which are often produced for seamless mixing.
This update arrives as competition in streaming intensifies. Apple Music recently previewed its AutoMix feature in the iOS 26 developer beta, a direct rival to Spotify’s offering, signalling a growing trend of streaming services moving toward DJ-style functionality. By integrating lightweight DJ tools into its platform, Spotify is positioning itself as a more flexible hub for music discovery and listening experiences.
The new playlist mixing feature is gradually rolling out to most Premium users worldwide, with a phased rollout continuing in select APAC markets. Spotify recommends updating the app to the latest version on iOS or Android to gain access to the new feature as soon as it becomes available.
For now, whether you are curating a workout mix, setting the vibe for a house party, or simply shaping your daily soundtrack, Spotify is letting listeners take charge like never before.
