WhatsApp and Messenger get new Meta tools to fight scams

Meta has unveiled new tools designed to help WhatsApp and Messenger users protect themselves from scams and keep their accounts secure.

On Messenger, the company is testing enhanced scam-detection features that alert users when they receive suspicious messages from new contacts. Users will also have the option to submit recent messages for AI-powered analysis to identify potential scam activity.

The New Anti-Scam Features

Meta has rolled out a suite of new anti-scam features across its platforms to enhance user safety and account protection.

Screen-Sharing Warnings on WhatsApp:ย A new in-app alert now appears when users attempt to share their screen during a video call with someone outside their contact list. This feature is designed to stop scammers from tricking people into revealing sensitive information such as bank details or verification codes.

Passkey-Based Login:ย Across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, users can now secure their accounts with Passkeys, using fingerprint, facial recognition, or a device PIN for safer logins and stronger protection against unauthorized access.

AI-Powered Scam Detection on Messenger:ย Currently in testing, Messenger can identify suspicious messages from new contacts and notify users of potential scams. It also lets users submit recent messages for AI review, which provides safety insights and options to block or report suspicious accounts if a scam is detected.

Security and Privacy Checkups:ย Improved Security Checkup tools on Facebook and Instagram let users review password strength, two-factor authentication, and active sessions. WhatsAppโ€™s Privacy Checkup guides users through key privacy options, including managing who can add them to group chats and customizing visibility settings.

Meta On a Spree

Meta announced that it has taken down close to 8 million accounts since the beginning of 2025 linked to organized scam centers operating in countries such as Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, the United Arab Emirates, and the Philippines.

In addition to this, the company removed over 21,000 Facebook Pages and accounts that impersonated customer service representatives, which were used to deceive victims into sharing personal or financial information
