Raptr Hacked, You Should Change Your Passwords
One of the popular gaming network, Raptr has apparently become the recent victim of high profile hack attack.
The video game-themed social networking site was hacked and user credentials may have been compromised said Dennis Fong, Raptr Founder and CEO in a statement.
“We’re very sorry to inform you that some Raptr user data may have been recently compromised in an attack similar to hacking activities that have targeted other high-profile sites and services such as Xbox Live and Sony’s PlayStation Network.” Raptr Founder and CEO Dennis Fong said.
Though Raptr has not divulged exact details about how and when the hacking attack occurred, Fong has also requested all the Raptr users to change their passwords for Raptr immediately. Fong also said that the company is sending out emails to all account holders alerting them about the hack.
An Raptor user and NeoGAF forum member, Yatesl stated on a forum post that “I’ve just received an email from Raptr. Some users may use them to aggregate achievements, and they also partner with AMD for their GeForce Experience type program.”
For the uninitiated, Raptr is a social-networking website and instant messenger and is used by many video-game players. Dennis Fong, co-founder of Xfire, founded the company Raptr, Inc. in 2007; it is located in Mountain View, California.
In the email from Raptr, also posted on the Raptr company website, CEO Dennis Fong details the extent of the hack in the email. The email is reproduced below :

Maintaining the highest level of security around your Raptr account information is of the utmost importance to us, so we’re very sorry to inform you that some Raptr user data may have been recently compromised in an attack similar to hacking activities that have targeted other high-profile sites and services such as Xbox Live and Sony’s PlayStation Network.
User names, email addresses, password hashes, and some first and last names may have been accessed. This means that although the passwords are hashed, users with weak passwords are vulnerable to unauthorized access. It’s important to note that our two-factor authentication system used for redeeming Raptr Reward Points ensures that even if your Raptr account was among those compromised, the points you’ve earned as a Raptr member are protected.
Although the potential risk to Raptr users is pretty minimal, we urge you to access any accounts on other sites and services in which you use the same login and password associated with your Raptr account and change the related password(s) immediately.
Reset your password at your earliest convenience in order to help safeguard your Raptr account. In doing so, we strongly advise you to use a password that is reasonably complex and not associated with another site/service account.
We’re extremely sorry about this situation and are committed to further improving account security going forward.
Founder & CEO, Raptr
Fong encourages users who share the same Raptr username and password longin information with other services to change login details on those services as well.
Fong has assured the Raptr users that their Raptr Reward Points, the reward system used to earn in-game gifts have not been compromised. He states that even if the user account may have been compromised the associated points are safe.
Many owners of the AMD Radeon brand of graphics cards typically use Raptr to automatically update drivers and optimize games installed on their systems. By using the Raptr Rewards system, users can earn points toward free games, video cards, beta keys, discounts and even custom-built gaming PC’s.
