Apple Launches iPhone 6s & iPhone 6s Plus With 3D Touch Display, 12MP iSight Camera

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus launched with 3D touch display, faster processors and improved cameras

Apple announced its latest iPhones – iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus – at a special event in San Francisco on Wednesday. Described as the “most advanced phones ever” by CEO Tim Cook, the pre-orders for the new iPhone models begin September 12, which will start selling across 130 countries from September 25.

Apple has made changes to the way we interact with the phone’s touchscreen by adding in the force dimension to the touch screen. Called 3D, this is an upgraded version of the Force Touch Display that Apple launched in the Apple Watch. 3D Touch lets users navigate on the iPhone by sensing pressure to enable new gestures such as Peek and Pop.

This new feature lets you reduce on the number of clicks required to get work done, by using force touch along with swiping gestures. The users can press lightly to see a photo, email, web page or other content, and press a little deeper to go right into the content itself. With Quick Actions, 3D Touch provides shortcuts via simple press from the Home screen on many of Apple’s native apps.

This display technology would also make it easier to navigate through apps; for example, you will be able to see all active apps with a long-press at the edge of the screen. Apple will also let app developers take advantage of the 3D Touch Display. It has also integrated the Taptic Engine inside the phone to provide feedback.

The iPhone 6s comes with a 4.7-inch with a 1334 x 750 pixel Retina Display, whereas the iPhone 6s Plus comes with a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 pixel Retina display. The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are 0.2mm thicker than the last generation iPhones with the iPhone 6s at 7.3mm and iPhone 6s Plus at 7.1mm. The new iPhones feature faster-second-generation TouchID sensor and are made of tough aircraft grade aluminum.

Under the hood is the new 64-bit A9 chipset that is 70% faster at carrying out processes than the one seen in last year’s iPhones. Similarly, the graphics processing will be 90% aided by a new graphics processor. Due to the additional weight of the 3D Touch display, the iPhone 6S Plus is now 20 grams heavier at 192 grams, and iPhone 6S is 14 grams heavier at 143 grams as compared to its predecessors.

One of the biggest upgrades to iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus is in the cameras. Both the phones come with 12MP iSight camera and a 5MP FaceTime HD camera with Retina Flash. This flash makes the display three times brighter with True Tone lighting, for bright selfies, says Apple. It also supports 4K video recording and Apple has extended optical image stabilisation (OIS) to video on iPhone 6s Plus. However, there is no clarify if OIS is available on the iPhone 6s yet.

Apple has introduced a feature called Live Photos that is on by default and lets you record a 1.5 second long video, before and after you have taken a shot. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are powered by a new A9 SoC, with M9 motion co-processor integrated into the chip, enabling always on ‘Hey Siri’ – you can now invoke Apple’s virtual assistant without pressing any buttons. On the connectivity front, you will get LTE Advanced, 802.11ac Wifi, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, Wi-fi calling, GPS and GLONASS. It will also support Apple Pay.

In terms of accessories, the new iPhone models will ship with new docks, leather and silicone covers. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will come with iOS 9 that includes major battery tweaks that may help the users. The company’s website also does mention though that the two smartphones will deliver the same battery life as their respective predecessors. The iOS 9 will become available to existing iOS devices on September 16.

Compared to their predecessors, the price for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus remain unchanged: $649 for the 16GB iPhone 6s, $749 for the 64GB iPhone 6s and $849 for the 128GB iPhone 6s, whereas $749 for the 16GB iPhone 6s Plus, $849 for the 64GB iPhone 6s Plus, and $949 for the 128GB iPhone 6s Plus (all US prices). There is no news on the Indian price or launch date as of yet.

The new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be available in four colours: Silver, Gold, Space Grey, and a new Rose Gold Aluminium finish, made from a custom alloy designed by Apple. The initial launch of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will take place in the UK, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the US beginning Friday, September 25.
