Guide to unroot your android phone
With the power and usability that comes with a rooted device, also comes a time when you might have the need to unroot your smartphone. There are a few methods to carry this out, no matter which one you choose, be sure to back up all your data before proceeding.
SuperSU
SuperSU is a root management app that allows you to grantย or deny sitesโ requests for super user permission, it keeps track of permissible apps and also lets you unroot your phone. Inside the app, scroll down to theย Full Unroot option to begin the process.
Flash Stock Firmware
Probably the most thorough way to unroot your device is by flashing the stock firmware onto it. This will erase any trace of your device ever being rooted. First thing you will need, is the factory image of your device on your computer.ย XDA is a great resource. Unzip the file that you have downloaded. Within it, you should find another zipped file, unzip that one too.The unzipped folder should contain a bootloader image, radio, and various scripts, and one more zipped file. Unzip it.
- Download the Android SDK tools from Google’s developer site by clicking here.
- When asked to choose a directory to install the software, it is recommended to install it toย C:android-sdk.ย If you choose a different location, be sure to remember it.
- Once installed, launch it from the Start Menu
- The SDK Manager will open. Just uncheck everything except Android SDK Platform-tools. Itโs at the top.
- Click on Install 2 packages at the bottom right.
- Check Accept license and click Install.
Next, ensure you have OEM unlocking enabled on your device. Follow these steps to do it:
- Tap on About Phone and find the Build Number.
- Tap on the Build Numberย seven times and the Developer Options will appear on the main page of the Settings.
- Tap on the Back key to see the Developer Options.
- Tap on Developer Options.
- Check to enable OEM Unlocking.
Switch back to your computer. Copy the boot.img in the folder you unzipped and place it in your ADB folder โ C:android-sdk. Next, connect you phone to your computer via USB and open a command prompt on your PC. In the command prompt, enter ย the following commands:
- adb reboot bootloader
- fastboot flash boot boot.img
- fastboot reboot
Unroot using a file explorer
If your phone is running Android 6 or higher, you have an option of unrooting your android smartphoneย by simply deleting the files that granted you root access. Use a file explorer that can access the root location on your device, then follow these steps:
- Find the root drive under ‘/ ‘
- Go to system > bin, then tap and hold on busybox and su and delete them.
- Now go to system > xbin, thenย tap and hold on busybox and su and delete them.
- Finally, go to system > app and deleteย supeuser.apk.
- Restart the device and you should be unrooted.
OTA Update
The final way to unroot your device is by installing an over the air update. Look for an update underย Settings>About Device. Just be careful when you proceed with this as it might not work with every device.
