Netflix to crack down on users sharing passwords with friends and family

Netflix Wants “Consumer-Friendly” Ways To Crack Down On Password Sharing

Netflix, one of the popular video streaming services, has announced that it would soon limit the password sharing by users with their family and friends.

Greg Peters, the Chief Product Officer of Netflix, in an interview discussing their Q3 2019 earnings on Wednesday, said that sharing a single Netflix account bypasses the company’s business model.

Hence, they are monitoring password sharing between multiple people for single accounts, and are exploring ways to crack down on the practice, but in a “consumer-friendly way”.

“We continue to monitor it,” Peters says of account users sharing their passwords. “We’ll continue to look at the situation and we’ll see those consumer-friendly ways to push on the edge of that but we’ve got no big plans at this point in time in terms of doing something different there.”

While the streaming service did not divulge any details about its course of action, it could likely limit the number of devices and/or IP addresses.

Currently, the number of devices on which a Netflix account can be streamed at the same time (depending on the plan) is limited; however, passwords can be shared infinitely.

Since Netflix has no immediate plans for implementing password sharing rules, the owners of streaming service accounts can continue to share their passwords with family and friends with little to worry about.
