Google is taking Chrome far beyond being “just a browser.” In what the company calls the biggest upgrade to Chrome in its history, Google is rolling out a host of new artificial intelligence (AI) features designed to make browsing smarter, safer, and more productive.
The changes center around Gemini, Google’s flagship AI model, which is now deeply integrated into Chrome across desktop and mobile. The updates aim to turn Chrome from a simple browser into a true AI assistant, helping users understand complex webpages, block scams, streamline daily tasks, and stay safe online, while still keeping user control and privacy at the forefront.
Here’s a closer look at the 10 new AI-powered features coming to Chrome.
1. Gemini in Chrome
Mac and Windows desktop users in the U.S. (with their language set to English) will now be able to access Gemini in Chrome to clarify complex information on any webpage (or webpages). Gemini will also be made available in Google Workspace (e.g., Gmail, Docs, Drive, etc.) with enterprise-level privacy and security controls in the coming weeks.
Additionally, Gemini is also coming to Chrome on Android and iOS in the U.S. On Android, you can activate Gemini not just in Chrome but in other apps too — by holding the power button. On iOS, Gemini will soon be built directly into the Chrome app.
2. Your New Agentic Browsing Assistant
Coming in the next few months, Gemini will gain agentic capabilities that will essentially act as a hands-on assistant on your behalf, like booking appointments or ordering groceries. Just tell Gemini, and it will handle the clicks and forms for you. Importantly, you can pause or stop the assistant at any time, ensuring your control over Gemini never slips away.
3. Smarter Tab Management
Gemini in Chrome can now summarize and consolidate details across multiple tabs, like flights, hotels, and activities, into a neat travel plan. Basically, it acts like a smart assistant that organizes info spread across different websites, saving you from switching back and forth.
4. Smarter Recall Of Past Sites
Gemini in Chrome will soon be able to act like a smart memory for your browsing. Simply ask Chrome to find that site you saw last week — even if you don’t remember the URL. It will search your history intelligently and bring the right page back instantly.
5. Deeper Google App Integration
Chrome is now tightly connected with other Google apps like Calendar, YouTube, and Maps, so you don’t have to keep switching tabs. Need to add an event to Calendar, find a spot in a YouTube video, or pull up directions from Maps? You can now do it directly through Gemini in Chrome — saving time and clicks while staying on the same page.
6. AI Mode In Search
Chrome will soon let you launch Google Search’s AI Mode directly from the address bar (omnibox) on your computer. You can ask longer, more complex questions and get AI-powered answers. It supports follow-up questions so you can explore topics in depth without starting over. This feature will roll out first this month in the U.S. in English, then expand to more countries and languages soon.
7. Ask About The Current Page
Instead of just passively reading, you will be able to ask Chrome questions from the omnibox (address bar) about the page you are viewing, getting AI-powered insights and answers right alongside the page without leaving it. You can also ask follow-up questions in AI Mode, making it easy to dive deeper into the topic. Contextual suggestions are available in the U.S. in English and will be rolling out to more countries and languages soon.
8. Stronger Scam Protection With Gemini Nano
Google is strengthening Chrome’s defenses with Gemini Nano, its lightweight AI model, to detect fake virus alerts, scam giveaways, and other online scams. The browser already uses Gemini Nano in Safe Browsing’s Enhanced Protection mode to catch tech-support fraud. These updates are rolling out first in English in the U.S. with broader availability in more countries and languages in the coming weeks.
9. Cutting Down Spammy Notifications And Permissions
Chrome’s new AI-driven system now detects potentially spammy or scammy notifications. It uses AI to handle intrusive permission requests more intelligently, like access to your location or camera, presenting them in a less intrusive way when you are unlikely to accept.
10. One-Click Password Changes
Finally, Chrome’s password manager is stepping up. It will soon let you change compromised logins instantly on supported sites like Coursera, Spotify, Duolingo, H&M, and more — all in just one click.
The Bigger Picture
With this rollout, Google is positioning Chrome as a personal AI-powered assistant — one that can simplify your daily tasks, protect you from scams, and help you make sense of the endless flow of online information.
