  1. Here is a simple method which I have not seen in any blog or forum. For people who have already tried deleting/merging contacts, or using an app, and still have duplicates show up over time (Android only):

    – open CONTACTS
    – open the drop-down menu (three tiny vertical dots in stock Android)
    – tap CONTACTS TO DISPLAY
    – make sure Google is the only account selected

    Many apps use contact information. For each app (besides Google) that you have selected under CONTACTS TO DISPLAY, you could have a duplicate contact.
