Windows 10 KB4517211 update is breaking Search and VMware Workstation

Some users experiencing Search and VMware Workstation issues after installing Windows 10 KB4517211 update

Microsoft’s latest optional cumulative update for 1903 released on September 26, 2019, is causing Windows Search and VMWare Workstation to fail for some users, reports Windows Latest.

Users who have installed KB4517211 (OS Build 18362.387) took to Microsoft’s community forum as well as Feedback Hub to complain about unresponsive Windows Desktop Search pages as well as killing of VMware Workstation Pro on several configurations.

“After installing KB4517211 and rebooting, you cannot type anything into the search field. You can’t even get your cursor in there,” wrote one user on Feedback about Search.

“Forced to uninstall and then block the cumulative update KB4517211 because it causes search not to work from the taskbar search icon (search window not displayed), nor from just typing on Windows Start Menu,” wrote another user with a similar problem.

Besides Windows Search, users are also receiving an error message on launching VMWare Workstation Pro. “VMware Workstation Pro can’t run on Windows: Check for an updated version of this app that runs on Windows,” reads a notification from the Windows Compatibility Assistant.

Microsoft is yet to acknowledge these problems. Currently, these issues cannot be resolved and the only workaround is to uninstall the optional cumulative update, roll back to a previous build of Windows 10, and stop updates until an official fix is released.
