Microsoft Authenticator: Export Passwords By July 2025

We reported earlier this month that Microsoft has plans to phase out the password storage and autofill feature from its Microsoft Authenticator app starting in July 2025, with a complete phase-out by August 2025.

Now, the app has started warning users that its password autofill feature will stop working in July 2025, and it is encouraging everyone to switch over to Microsoft Edge to use these functionalities instead.

For those unaware, Microsoft Authenticator is a mobile app designed to provide an extra layer of security through multi-factor authentication (MFA).

It helps users confirm their identity by using a second method, like a code, push notification, or biometric data such as a fingerprint or face scan, alongside their regular password.

The app also supports passwordless sign-ins and, until recently, included a password autofill feature that synced across devices through a Microsoft account.

Timeline of the Phase Out

June 2025: You will no longer be able to save new passwords in Authenticator.

July 2025: You will not be able to use autofill withย Authenticator.

August 2025: Your saved passwords will no longer be accessible in Authenticator.

If you are one of those who depend on password autofill through Authenticator, nowโ€™s the right time to start planning your switch, whether to Microsoft Edge or choose another password manager that works best for you.

For those who prefer a different password manager, thereโ€™s still good news: you can export your passwords from Authenticator as a CSV file and import them into the tool of your choice.

Microsoft has started displaying a full-screen alert in the app informing users to export their saved passwords before July 1, 2025, or move to Microsoft Edge to continue using autofill.

The Redmond giant is giving users until August 1, 2025, to get their saved login information out of the app before it is gone for good.

“Autofill via Authenticator ends in July 2025. You can export your saved info (passwords only) from Authenticator until Autofill ends. Access your passwords and addresses via Microsoft Edge at any time,โ€ reads the Microsoft Authenticator notification about deprecation.

“To keep autofilling your info, turn on Edge or other provider.”

It also gives the user the option to export their saved passwords (note: only saved passwords, not generated ones or the ones on password history) and switch to another autofill provider like Edge.

There is also a button labelled โ€œTurn on Edgeโ€ that will take iOS users directly to their AutoFill & Passwords setting screen to set up Microsoft Edge as their default password autofill provider.

According to Microsoftโ€™s support page, all saved passwords and addresses are synced with your Microsoft account. In other words, if you make the move to Edge, you will still have access to all your informationย once the feature is deprecated.

“Yourย saved passwordsย (but not yourย generated passwordย history) and addressesย are securely synced to your Microsoft account, and you can continue to access them and enjoy seamless autofill functionality withย Microsoft Edge, a secure and user-friendly AI-powered web browser that offers features such as Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, Password Monitor, and InPrivate search,” reads theย Microsoft support page.
