If your Windows 11 lock screen suddenly stopped showing the password sign-in icon, youโre not alone! Microsoft has confirmed that a recent Windows 11 update can cause the password sign-in icon to disappear from the lock screen, even though the button itself still works.
The issue began after users installed the August 2025 KB5064081 non-security preview update and continues to appear in all subsequent cumulative updates on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices.
What is happening?
According to the Redmond giant, the bug affects people who have multiple sign-in methods enabled, such as a PIN, fingerprint, security key, and password. Under normal circumstances, Windows 11 only displays the password icon when more than one sign-in option is available. However, due to this rendering glitch, the password icon does not appear even when it should.
Despite the missing icon, the password sign-in button is still clickable โ itโs just invisible. Microsoft says that hovering the mouse cursor over the blank space reveals the hidden button, and clicking it opens the password text field as usual, allowing users to log in normally.
“If you hover over the space where the icon should appear, you’ll see that the password button is still available. Select this placeholder to open the password text box and enter your password. After entering your password, you can sign in normally,”ย Microsoft explained in a support page.
The company has not offered an official workaround beyond using this invisible button and says it is actively working on a fix. No release timeline has been announced. For now, hovering your mouse or using Ctrl + Alt + Delete to reach sign-in options is the easiest solution.
Microsoft is urging users to keep their systems updated and watch for the patch that will restore the missing password icon. Until then, the invisible button serves as a subtle reminder that even small visual glitches can cause big headaches in daily use.
