Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5), a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Rockstar Games, is one of the longest-running games in the GTA series, which is playable on PlayStation, Xbox consoles, and Microsoft Windows PC.
However, in December 2023, the gameโs source code was leaked online, opening up opportunities for the modding community to release the iconic title on new platforms other than the ones already available.
Now, a dedicated team of modders is reportedly working on making GTA 5 playable on Android, Nintendo Switch, and Linux devices by unofficially porting the game themselves, as claimed in an X (formerly Twitter) post by GTA Focal (@GTAFocal), a Grand Theft Auto news portal, last week.
โA group of modders are trying to port GTA 5 to the Nintendo Switch, Linux, and Android thanks to the source code leak from December,โ the post read.

The X post also included a video and screenshot with error messages showing that GTA 5 is unable to go past the loading screen on Nintendo Switch and Android. The leak suggests that the port is not yet completely operational on these unofficial platforms, indicating that the work is currently in the early stages. It may take a while before it is playable on handheld consoles and smartphones.
With Rockstar Games already bringing titles like the GTA Trilogy Definitive Editon and Red Dead Redemption on Nintendo Switch in the past, GTA 5โs potential arrivalย on the handheld console in the future cannot be discarded.
On March 15, 2022, Rockstar Games released an “Expanded & Enhanced” version of GTA 5 for PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox Series S/X. This version featured technical enhancements and performance updates on current-gen consoles.
Following years of speculation and anticipation, Rockstar officially confirmed in February 2022 that GTA 5โs much-awaited sequel, Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), was in development. In December 2023, the developer released the first trailer of GTA 6 on its official YouTube channel, announcing that the game will be arriving in 2025 on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.
