Installing Windows 11 on Nintendo Switch Is Possible Now But Should You Try?

You can easily choose between console-like Windows PCs or dedicated ones like Nintendo Switch when you need a portable gaming machine.

Or, if thatโ€™s too easy for you, do something PatRyk (@Patrosi73 on X) did.

This user successfully installed an ARM build of Windows 11 on their Nintendo Switch console.

The process took about 3 hours and is not the best Windows experience, the user said on their X post.

He also went on to call this system the worldโ€™s slowest PC. Thatโ€™s no surprise, given that Nintendo Switch is barely designed to run anything besides the custom Switch firmware.

The same user has done some other experiments with his Nintendo Switch. As though running Windows was not enough, PatRyk installed Ubuntu on his Switch and managed to run Steam via a virtual machine. As for the โ€œworldโ€™s slowest Windows PC,โ€ the X user made use of an ARM64 version of Windows 11 with KVM enabled.

While the functionality of these experiments remains questionable, we must appreciate how compatible the ARM versions of Operating Systems are.

On any day, a Nintendo Switch running Windows 11 canโ€™t compete with something like Lenovo Legion Go or ROG Ally.

On the bright side, manufacturers like Nintendo are planning to step up the performance factor on upcoming devices. For instance, the Nintendo Switch successor will reportedly pack powerful CPUs that can compete with PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Now, considering that a 2015-based Nintendo Switch can handle Windows 11, Steam, and Linux, the up-and-coming powerful consoles will be a sight for the portable gaming scene.
