Nintendo Switch Emulator Ryujinx Shuts Down

Popular open-source Nintendo Switch emulator Ryujinx has been officially pulled offline after Nintendo approached its lead developer with an agreement to stop working on the project.

While the agreement reportedly made between Nintendo and the Ryujinx creator is unknown, another fellow developer, โ€˜rip in peri periโ€™ on the project, announced the news on the Ryujinx Discord server, as well as on Ryujinx’s X/Twitter account:

“Yesterday, [Ryujinx creator] gdkchan was contacted by Nintendo and offered an agreement to stop working on the project, remove the organization and all related assets he’s in control of,” rip in peri peri posted on theย Ryujinx Discord.

“While awaiting confirmation on whether he would take this agreement, the organization has been removed, so I think it’s safe to say what the outcome is. Rather than leave you with only panic and speculation, I decided to write this short message to give some closure.”

This message came hours after some users reported a 404 message yesterday when trying to access Ryujinx’s GitHub page. Others pointed outย that Ryujinx’s download page wasnโ€™t loading and had become inaccessible, raising concerns about the emulation project.

For those unaware, Ryujinx is an open-source Nintendo Switch emulator project written in C# for Windows, Linux, and macOS. The project aims to provide excellent accuracy and performance, a user-friendly interface, and consistent builds.

โ€œWritten from scratch, the project began with a single developer in 2017 and continues on with a competent core team and help from dozens of contributors,โ€ says Ryujinxโ€™s website.

Nintendoโ€™s latest crackdown on Ryujinx follows its lawsuit against Tropic Haze LLC, creators of the popular Switch emulator Yuzu, earlier this year for illegally circumventing Nintendoโ€™s software encryption and facilitating piracy.

In the lawsuit, Nintendo claimed that a copy ofย The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was leaked online a week and a half before its launch and downloaded illegally more than one million times before its official release.

The result of the lawsuit between Nintendo and Tropic Haze LLC was a settlement of 2.4 millionย US dollars to Nintendo and the complete shutdown of Yuzu operations.
