A recent report from a U.S security firm shows evidence of Russian Governments involvement in hacking of hundreds of American, European and Asian Companies.

Cyber attacks by Moscow was carried out for spying over these companies to enhance economic growth rather than any political gains.

According to the reports, Russia’s espionage campaign was directed primarily at energy and technology firms, some of which had lost valuable intellectual property. It said among the victims were, mostly European energy companies and defense contractors as well as manufacturing and construction firms.

Security firm “CrowdStrike” that made the charges over Russia, have declined to reveal any further information on the name of the Companies being targeted and effected, citing confidentiality agreements related to its investigation.

“These attacks appear to have been motivated by the Russian government’s interest in helping its industry maintain competitiveness in key areas of national importance,” CrowdStrike Chief Technology Officer Dmitri Alperovitch told Reuters.

CrowdStrike published its report this wednesday which also includes reports of Cyber attacks on Companies by China, and reports on Pro Syrian hacker Syrian Electronic Army.

CrowdStrike explained they have been monitoring the activities of Russian hackers from last two years, and they believe Russian Government is behind the Campaign because of the Technical indicators and types of targets chosen.

“They are copying the Chinese playbook,” Alperovitch remarked. “Cyber espionage is very lucrative for economic benefit to a nation.”

Russian Government have not made any comments yet, over the Spying charges made to them.
