Google Inc wished farewell to its first social networking service “Orkut”. the service which completed 10 years this year.

Google said it will shut down “Orkut” on September 30th. the social networking service which gained most popularity in India and Brazil had also carved a niche for itself  in Pakistan and U.S. However over the years it  failed to gain world wide users due to tough competition from Facebook.

Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut’s growth, we’ve decided to bid Orkut farewell. Company said in a blog post.

“Orkut” started its journey in 2004, the same year when Facebook was founded. Orkut was able to gain quick popularity and get a good start but it could not maintain the growth momentum too long. The Google’s try at social Networking  soon started to loose its relevance with majority of its fans moving on to Facebook.  A small part of dedicated fans are now left in the Orkut Community. Facebook has now became the world’s largest Social networking website with more than 1.28 billion users.

Is Google’s Social networking plans coming to and end !!! earlier in April Vic Gundotra, the head of Google’s social networking services, left the company.

Gundotra oversaw the 2011 launch of Google+, a social networking service which made it existence with quick popularity and was thought to be competing with Facebook.

However Google+ made its way to lot more than Social Networking Service, Google+ has become a unified user identity for Google product users. the company last year Google made it a necessity for users to log into their Google+ account to comment over youtube videos.

The Company has also stopped accepting new sign in’s for new accounts for Orkut. however the existing user can still use their account till september 30th. users can export their profile data, community posts and photos using Google Takeout.

The Company will also preserve an archive of all Orkut communities that will be available from September 30. if a user doesn’t want his posts or name to be included in the community archive, he can remove Orkut permanently from his Google account.
