LockBit Ransomware Creator’s Face Revealed and Sanctioned

The notorious and infamous ransomware LockBit has wreaked havoc across the world, raking almost $500 million in ransom.

Finally, its creator Dmitry Khoroshev, AKA LockBitSupp, is identified by NCA, FBI, and international partners as a part of the Operation Cronos taskforce.

Khoroshev enjoyed the anonymity but it didn’t last long. The LockBit creator was so confident of his secrecy that he offered $10 million for anyone who revealed his identity.

This is the same FBI’s reward of $10 million on tipping and providing information regarding Khoroshev.

What is LockBit Ransomware?

For the uninitiated, LockBit is a ransomware that has been active since 2019 and operates on a ransomware-as-a-service model. It encrypts victims’ files, demanding a ransom for decryption.

LockBit also threatens to release stolen data if the ransom is not paid, a tactic known as double extortion. It spreads quickly within networks and primarily targets organizations.

The ransomware is continuously updated, with newer versions like LockBit 2.0 introducing more sophisticated features to evade detection and better effectiveness.

The Deeds of LockBit Ransomware

LockBit Ransomware, as of February 2024, impacted over 100 hospitals and healthcare companies, with at least 2,110 victims entering some level of negotiation with cyber criminals. Out of 194 affiliates using LockBit’s services:

  • 119 engaged in negotiations with their victims, indicating confirmed attacks.
  • 148 preplanned and orchestrated attacks.
  • Out of these 119, 39 seem not to have received any ransom payments.
  • Additionally, 75 affiliates did not enter negotiations and also appear not to have received any ransom payments.

Whats in store for Khoroshev?

US and UK’s foreign treasury departments, alongside Australian Foreign Affairs, are working on maximum possible sanctions and punishment.

If indicted and arrested, the $100 billion ransoms in the US alone would amount to 185 years in maximum security prison for Khoroshev.

Separate sanctions have been announced by the UK and Australian justice departments. LockBitSupp would be in a trouble if he landed in any of the countries or of their allies.
