Microsoft Blocks Windows 11 24H2 Update Over Audio Bug

Microsoft has โ€œconfirmedโ€ that devices sporting Dirac Audio hardware will continue to be blocked from updating to Windows 11 version 24H2 until a proper fix is deployed.

For those unaware, this issue dates back to December 18, 2024, when the company discovered an audio output bug affecting devices equipped with Dirac Audio software utilizing the cridspapo.dll file.

The cridspapo.dll file is a software component related to the audio processing software for devices with Dirac Audio, a technology used to improve audio output.

Some users complained that following the Windows 11 version 24H2 update, their devices containing Dirac Audio with the cridspapo.dll file experienced problems, which included non-functional integrated speakers, Bluetooth speakers, and headsets, with both built-in and third-party applications unable to detect any audio devices.

Back then, the Dirac Audio issue was assigned the status of โ€œMitigatedโ€ by the Redmond giant, and a compatibility hold was implemented on devices containing Dirac Audio with the cridspapo.dll file.

This was done to prevent the installation of Windows 11 version 24H2 via Windows Update until a solution was found and to avoid users from encountering significant audio malfunctions post-update.

Despite efforts, Microsoft has yet to find a permanent workaround for this issue. As a result, the company has now changed the โ€œstatusโ€ of the issue from โ€œMitigatedโ€ to โ€œConfirmedโ€, meaning that it has officially acknowledged the issue after verifying its existence and is actively working to determine the root cause, assess the impact, and develop a potential fix.

How to know if your system is compatible?

To know whether your computer has a compatibility safeguard hold, go to Start > Settings >ย Windows Updateย >ย chooseย Check for Windows updates.

If your computer is placed on a compatibility safeguard hold, the following message will be displayed: โ€œUpgrade to Windows 11 is on its way to your device. There is nothing that requires your attention at the moment. Once the update is ready for your device, youโ€™ll see it available on this page.โ€

Microsoft urges affected users to avoid delaying updating to version 24H2 via the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or Media Creation Tool until it releases a fix.

“Once the driver addressing this issue is released by the manufacturer, Microsoft will partner to offer the new driver via Windows Update to resolve this audio issue. The safeguard hold preventing the update to version 24H2 will be lifted after this issue is resolved on end-usersโ€™ devices,โ€ the company wrote on its official Windows Health Dashboard website.
