If you have downloaded movies or TV shows to watch, you have definitely used Subscene to download subtitles.
Sadly, that won’t be possible since Subscene has shut down. The website owner wrote a brief yet heartfelt goodbye note on the official forums.
The main reason has been the financial problems. The site could not generate enough revenue to cover the server and maintenance costs.

The Website had Shutdown in 24 hours
On May 2, 2024, the owner posted on Subscene’s forums with the bad news.
They talked about how the site will shut down in the next 24 hours and will cease to exist.
The owner said that the website hasn’t been making enough money for a while because fewer people are visiting it, and it is becoming too expensive to keep up.
They are grateful for the hard work put into managing the website’s content, which is why the owner continued the site by paying its bills.
What about the Data?
The archive team started working in overdrive after the announcement. They have managed to back up the entire site and its content. You can read more about it on their GitHub page.
Many users complained that a 24-hour ultimatum is not enough to back up the site’s data.
However, people on Reddit’s r/DataHoarder wasted no time and backed up the entire 90 GB database within a couple of hours.
You can download it through a torrent file, magnet link, and also an NZB file (for Usenet users).
Any Subscene alternative?
You can use these Subscene alternatives to download subtitles of movies, TV shows and documentaries.
These are similar to Subscene and let you download subtitles in different languages.
The App Access is Gone
Many third-party apps on devices like TVs, tablets, and phones let you use subtitles from Subscenes.
That is not possible anymore, since it relied on Subscene’s website search to find and load the subtitle files.
