Apple Users Unexpectedly Logged Out Of Their Apple IDs

0

In a major service disruption, several Apple customers were unexpectedly locked out of their Apple ID across all devices and services without any explanation and were forced to reset their login credentials.

As first reported by 9to5Mac, the problem started surfacing on social media at around 8 p.m. Eastern Time on April 26th and continued to gain momentum into the night and became increasingly widespread into the early hours of the morning.

Affected Apple users took to Twitter, Threads, and other social media platforms to complain that their Apple ID logged them out of iPhones, iPads, Macs, and other Apple devices for no apparent reason, followed by a prompt to reset their account password.

When they tried to log back in using the existing passwords, they were unable to do so. As a result, they had to go through Apple’s account recovery process to reset their Apple ID account password to regain access to their devices.

“I was mid FaceTime and my Apple account got locked and signed out of all my Apple products,” posted @MaxWinebach on X.

Another user wrote, “Hey @AppleSupport all of my Apple products suddenly decided to lock me out of my Apple ID and asked me to re-verify my account. Except my password doesn’t work when I am 100% certain it is correct I get an error. What’s going on? I can’t even reset my password!”

“Seems at least some of us are experiencing issues with our iCloud/Apple ID accounts where we have to reset our passwords and re-login. Anyone else?” wrote a third user.

The unexpected account lockout also caused additional complications for affected users, especially for those who have Stolen Device Protection enabled and are away from a trusted location, making resetting the Apple account password more difficult.

Also, any previously established app-specific passwords within iCloud were also reset because of the service disruption.

Surprisingly, Apple’s own System Status webpage does not acknowledge this widespread issue with any of its services or systems, so there’s no clarity on the exact cause of the problem. Since most complaint reports are from the U.S., it seems that the issue has not impacted Apple users around the world.

Keep watching this space for more updates, as this is a developing story!

WhatsApp To Leave India If Forced To Break Encryption

0

WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging service, on Thursday, told the Delhi High Court that it would shut down operations in India if it is forced to break the message encryption system.

The Delhi High Court was hearing a plea filed by WhatsApp and its parent company Meta, which challenges Rule 4(2) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 for significant social media intermediaries.

This rule mandates them to trace chats and identify the first originator of information if a judicial order is passed by a court or any competent authority.

“As a platform, we are saying, if we are told to break encryption, then WhatsApp goes,” advocate Tejas Karia, appearing for WhatsApp, told Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora, adding that the rule was introduced without consultation.

Karia emphasized that the platform’s commitment to user privacy and the end-to-end encryption of messages are the reasons crores of users subscribe to its robust services. As user privacy is a core value, end-to-end encryption is essential to maintaining it.

Complying with the newly amended IT Rules would weaken encryption and infringe on user privacy rights enshrined in Articles 14, 19, and 21 of the Indian Constitution, which protect individuals’ freedom and liberties. It would also require WhatsApp to store millions of messages for years, an obligation that does not exist anywhere else in the world.

“We will have to keep a complete chain and we don’t know which messages will be asked to be decrypted. It means millions and millions of messages will have to be stored for a number of years,” Karia said.

Additionally, Karia also highlighted that the parent Information Technology Act does not provide for the breaking of encryption.

When the bench questioned whether similar laws existed anywhere else in the world. “Have these matters been taken up anywhere in the world? You have never been asked to share the information anywhere in the world? Even in South America?” to which Karia replied, ” There is no such rule anywhere else in the world. No, not even in Brazil.”

Advocate Kirtiman Singh, representing the central government, defended the regulations, citing the importance of tracing message originators, especially given India is WhatsApp’s largest market with over 400 million users. He also argued that WhatsApp and Meta make money by using users’ data for commercial purposes and are not entitled to claim they protect user privacy.

“The idea behind the guidelines was to trace the originator of the messages,” said Kirtiman. He added that some mechanism for tracing messages is necessary, especially considering the challenges WhatsApp faced before the U.S. Congress.

The Delhi High Court acknowledged that privacy rights are not absolute and that “somewhere balance has to be done.” It has adjourned the case for further hearing on August 14.

Opposing the petition by WhatsApp against the newly amended IT Rules, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) argued that the company has already violated the fundamental rights of Indian users by refuting them any dispute resolution rights in the country.

The MeitY told the court that if the IT Rules 2021 are not implemented, law enforcement agencies would struggle to trace the origin of fake messages, and such messages would lead to the proliferation of such messages across other platforms, thereby potentially disturbing peace and harmony in society.

WhatsApp earlier said, “Requiring messaging apps to ‘trace’ chats is the equivalent of asking us to keep a fingerprint of every single message sent on WhatsApp, which would break end-to-end encryption and fundamentally undermines people’s right to privacy.”

Now you have successfully disabled Windows 11 Start menu ads. If you want it back for any reason, you can enable it through the above-given steps.

How to avoid getting Ads in the Start Menu?

You can prevent the ads from appearing in the first place by skipping this KB5036980 update for now.

Now do remember that it will become part of the mandatory update in the coming months. You can hold it till then.

After that, you use the method we have given to disable ads in the Start menu of Windows 11.

Microsoft Must Remove Start Menu Ads

The subscription-based pricing model for Office 365 was just a scratch on the surface. These Start Menu ads on Windows 11 have certainly upset many people.

Microsoft should think twice before monetizing a product for which users already pay premium prices.

Ads in a paid product are never welcome. The sentiments would have been a little different if Windows 11 was a free product.

Microsoft Begins Rolling Out Ads In Windows 11 Start Menu

Microsoft, on late Tuesday, released a preview version of the KB5036980 optional update for Windows 11 version 22H2 (OS build 22621.3527) and 23H2 (OS build 22631.3527), which will be made a part of the “Patch Tuesday” update for May.

This update adds advertisements to the Start menu for third-party apps available in the Microsoft Store.

For those unaware, the Redmond giant earlier this month released the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.3495 (KB5037000) to the Beta Channel.

This build tested running ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for Beta users within the United States.

After a brief period of testing with Windows Insiders, Microsoft has now enabled the Start menu ads for everyone on Windows 11.

It has started rolling out the optional KB5036980 update for all Windows 11 users, which includes “Recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu to enhance users’ experience.

In other words, the “Recommended” section will suggest apps and games that the users can download from the Microsoft Store, subscribe to Co-pilot Pro, etc.

However, these recommendations are different from the “prompted” apps, which are ads.

“The Recommended section of the Start menu will show some Microsoft Store apps. These apps come from a small set of curated developers. This will help you to discover some of the great apps that are available,” Microsoft writes in its update notes.

Thankfully, these ads (or “recommendations”) popping up inside the Start menu on Windows 11 can be disabled.

If you have installed the latest KB5036980 update, you need to go to Settings > Personalization > Start and turn off the toggle that reads “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more.”

In addition to the above, the company is also planning to add frequently used apps to the Windows 11 Start menu.

“In the coming weeks, your most frequently used apps might appear in the Recommended section of the Start menu.

This applies to apps that you have not already pinned to the Start menu or the taskbar,” the update notes explain.

Currently, the KB5036980 update is optional, but Microsoft is expected to start pushing the new operating system to millions of Windows 11 laptops and desktop PCs in the coming weeks.

Russia’s APT28 Hackers Exploited Windows Flaw To Deploy ‘GooseEgg’ Malware

Microsoft recently disclosed that the Russian threat group “APT28″ used a previously unknown hacking tool, “GooseEgg” to exploit the Windows Print Spooler vulnerability to gain elevated access to target systems and steal credentials and information.

According to the Redmond giant’s threat intelligence team, APT28, also called Fancy Bear and Forest Blizzard (formerly Strontium), has been using the post-compromise tool since at least June 2020 and possibly as early as April 2019 to exploit the CVE-2022-38028 (CVSS score: 7.8) vulnerability in Windows Print Spooler service.

This tool modifies a JavaScript constraints file and executes it with SYSTEM-level permissions.

Although the company addressed the vulnerability, CVE-2022-38028, reported by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) as part of Microsoft’s October 2022 Patch Tuesday security updates, it made no mention of the flaw in its advisory.

Microsoft has observed APT28 using GooseEgg as part of post-compromise activities against various targets, including government, non-governmental, education, and transportation sector organizations in Ukraine, Western Europe, and North America.

While GooseEgg is a simple launcher application, it can spawn other applications at the command line with elevated permissions.

This allows threat actors to support malicious activities such as remote code execution, installing a backdoor, and moving laterally through compromised networks.

The U.S. and UK governments have linked Forest Blizzard to Unit 26165 of the Russian Federation’s military intelligence agency, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU).

“Microsoft has observed that, after obtaining access to a target device, Forest Blizzard uses GooseEgg to elevate privileges within the environment. GooseEgg is typically deployed with a batch script, which we have observed using the name execute.bat and doit.bat. This batch script writes the file servtask.bat, which contains commands for saving off/compressing registry hives. The batch script invokes the paired GooseEgg executable and sets up persistence as a scheduled task designed to run servtask.bat,” reads the advisory published by Microsoft on Monday.

Microsoft researchers noted that an embedded malicious DLL file typically, which includes the phrase “wayzgoose”; for example, wayzgoose23.dll, is a launcher application used by threat actors to launch other payloads with SYSTEM-level permissions, and install a backdoor, move laterally through the victim’s network, and remotely execute code on breached systems.

As mentioned earlier, the company patched the Print Spooler security flaw in 2022. It also patched the previously exploited PrintNightmare vulnerabilities in 2021.

“Customers who have not implemented these fixes yet are urged to do so as soon as possible for their organization’s security,” Microsoft said in its advisory.

Additionally, the company also recommends disabling the Print Spooler service on domain controllers where it isn’t required for domain controller operations.

Use Tiny11 Builder To Debloat Any Version Of Windows 11

0

NTDEV, the developer behind the renowned third-party app Tiny11 Builder, has released a new version of the Builder variant that lets you debloat any Windows 11 build or version.

As spotted by Neowin, the new version allows you to use it on ANY Windows 11 release (not just a specific build), as well as ANY language or architecture, which has been made possible due to the much-improved scripting capabilities of PowerShell.

Further, the free tool makes exclusive use of Microsoft-made utilities like DSIM for reliability and includes no utilities from external sources.

However, the only executable included is oscdimg.exe, which is provided in the Windows ADK and is used to create bootable ISO images.

In addition, also included is an unattended answer file that is used to bypass the Microsoft Account on OOBE and deploy the image with the /compact flag.

Here’s a list of all the apps that are removed from Windows 11 using Tiny11 Builder:

Clipchamp, News, Weather, Xbox (although Xbox Identity provider is still here, so it should be possible to be reinstalled with no issues), GetHelp, GetStarted, Office Hub, Solitaire, PeopleApp, PowerAutomate, ToDo, Alarms, Mail and Calendar, Feedback Hub, Maps, Sound Recorder, Your Phone, Media Player, QuickAssist, Internet Explorer, Tablet PC Math, Edge, OneDrive

As the tool is open-source, you are free to add or remove anything you want.

If the new version of Tiny11 Builder sounds interesting, you can head over to the project’s GitHub page.

Since the updated Tiny11 Builder uses PowerShell, you need to set the execution policy to Unrestricted before running the script.

To do so, Set-ExecutionPolicy unrestricted command as Administrator in PowerShell, otherwise it would just crash. Once done, simply follow the instructions provided.

US House Passes Bill That Could Ban TikTok Or Force To Sale

The House of Representatives on Saturday passed legislation that would ban TikTok in the United States if its Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance, does not sell its stake within a year.

“This bill protects Americans and especially America’s children from the malign influence of Chinese propaganda on the app TikTok. This app is a spy balloon in Americans’ phones,” Michael McCaul, the bill’s author and Texas Republican representative told in a statement.

The revised divest-or-ban legislation on TikTok was passed by a 360-58 vote, with strong support from a majority of both Republicans and Democrats. The updated TikTok bill comes as part of a broader package from House Republican speaker Mike Johnson that includes foreign aid and national security bills to support Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.

For those unaware, the House passed a similar bill in March that required China’s ByteDance to sell TikTok within 180 days or face a ban in the United States.

This bill was advanced on a unanimous bipartisan vote, 50-0, in the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

The revised legislation will now head to the Senate, which is expected to vote on the bill next week. Even U.S. President Joe Biden has said he will sign the legislation.

If the bill becomes law, ByteDance would have nine months to sell TikTok and a possible three-month extension if a sale was in progress.

It is also likely to try to challenge the law in court, arguing that it infringes the app’s millions of users of their First Amendment rights. However, such court challenges could significantly delay the timeline set out.

“Extending the divestment period is necessary to ensure there is enough time for a new buyer to get a deal done. I support this updated legislation,” said Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell.

Lawmakers from Republicans and Democrats, as well as law enforcement and intelligence officials, have long expressed concerns that TikTok may present a Chinese government spying risk and pose a severe threat to U.S. national security.

Further, the Chinese authorities could force ByteDance to submit data of roughly 170 million Americans who use TikTok.

However, TikTok has repeatedly denied that the app has ever been used to share U.S. user data with Chinese authorities and will not do so if asked to.

ByteDance has strongly opposed the legislation, with the company posting a statement arguing that the House is “using the cover of important foreign and humanitarian assistance to once again jam through a ban bill that would trample the free speech rights of 170 million Americans, devastate 7 million businesses, and shutter a platform that contributes $24 billion to the U.S. economy, annually,” said Alex Haurek, a spokesman for the company.

If the law gets passed, this would mark the first time ever the U.S. government has used it to shut down an entire social media platform.

What do the AnTuTu scores mean?

Geekbench score

AnTuTu performs various tests on the mobile SOC (System on a Chip) and then gives it a score. You can use it to compare different SOCs. Higher scores generally indicate better performance.

AnTuTu does a bunch of tests to check how well your phone works. It looks at things like how fast the CPU and graphics (GPU) of your phone are, how quick the memory works, and how fast your phone can save or read stuff from its storage.

These tests try to imitate what you do on your phone every day, like playing games, browsing the web, or using multiple apps at once.

What does the Geekbench score mean?

Geekbench focuses more on CPU and memory performance. Geekbench runs a bunch of tests on the device’s CPU and memory, evaluating tasks like encryption, compression, image processing, and more.

The Geekbench score is calculated based on the results of these tests, with higher scores indicating better performance.

You get two scores here, one for single-core and another for multi-core performance.

GeekBench is also highly rated because it stays the same across different platforms. So you can use it on Android and then on Windows but the score will be the same for the same processor(SOC).

What to look for in a processor on a smartphone?

  • Power efficiency – You can’t always be plugged in while gaming. The SOC needs to be efficient and manage power usage well so that the battery lasts longer during intensive gaming sessions.
  • Thermal management – A power-efficient processor helps manage the heat better on mobile devices.
Efficient also affects how much heat is generated, which in turn impacts performance and device lifespan.
  • 5G and 6G Support – Most modern processors support 5G technology along with fewer 6G bands. Choosing a processor with 5G or 6G capabilities can future-proof your device as faster internet rolls out.
  • Camera Recording Resolution – Many processors in mid and lower-range smartphones limit video recording to 1080p. There is no way to record in 4K even if the camera setup supports it.

So make sure to check that on the SOC of the phone before finalizing the device.

Which are the best mobile processors for Gaming on a Smartphone?

Gaming on mobile means that you need a powerful processor combined with a decent GPU to get you through with more FPS and zero lag.

Right now, you can rely on smartphones with MediaTek Dimensity 9300, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, or even a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

On the iPhone/iPad, you can get the A17 Pro on the top-end iPhones while A16 and A15 Bionic perform pretty well.

If you want to game on iPad then go with newer editions M1 and M2 chips.
